The Westminster City Council in California has approved a 4-1 vote to rename a portion of All American Way as Charlie Kirk Way. This decision honors Charlie Kirk, a pro-life conservative speaker and founder of Turning Point USA, who was assassinated in September at Utah Valley University. The renaming applies to the section of All American Way between Westminster Boulevard and 13th Street, located near the Vietnam War Memorial. The estimated cost for the new street signs is approximately $3,000.

Mayor Chi Charlie Nguyen, a Republican candidate for Congress, proposed the renaming, stating it reflects the values of pride in the country, freedom, and civic engagement. Kirk was known for his advocacy for pro-life issues and mobilizing young voters in support of conservative policies, particularly against abortion and for limited government. The renaming is seen as a recognition of his commitment to these causes, which resonate in the predominantly Republican city within a largely Democratic state.

Councilmember Amy Phan West, who supported the renaming, also proposed establishing an annual Charlie Kirk Day, emphasizing Kirk's role as a champion of free speech and open dialogue. However, the decision faced opposition from Vice Mayor Carlos Manzo, the only Democrat on the council, who criticized the move as an exploitation of Kirk's death for political purposes. Some residents expressed their discontent during the council meeting, advocating for the recognition of local figures instead and questioning the use of public funds for the tribute. Despite the opposition, supporters view the renaming as a fitting tribute to Kirk's legacy in promoting conservative values and engaging youth in civic matters.
