Changes to Trump's Portrait Display at Smithsonian
Jan, 11 2026
The White House has not confirmed whether it requested these changes. However, Trump had previously ordered a review of Smithsonian exhibits in anticipation of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, aiming to align them with his vision of celebrating American exceptionalism and removing divisive narratives. The original text of Trump's display noted his Supreme Court nominations and the development of COVID-19 vaccines, concluding with details of his impeachments and subsequent acquittals by the Senate.
In contrast, the displays for other impeached presidents, such as Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, continue to include references to their impeachments. The gallery has stated that the history of presidential impeachments is still represented in its museums, including the National Museum of American History.
Trump's administration has sought to influence how history and culture are presented in federal institutions, including the Smithsonian. This includes a critical stance on how slavery is depicted in American history. Additionally, Trump has made personnel changes within the National Archives and the National Portrait Gallery, including the resignation of the gallery's director, Kim Sajet, despite her support from the Smithsonian's governing board. The White House has also created a partisan display known as the 'Presidential Walk of Fame,' which features gilded photographs and subjective descriptions of past presidents, contrasting sharply with the portrayal of President Joe Biden.
