Public Discontent with ICE Following Fatal Shooting

Another YouGov poll released on January 8 indicated that 51% of respondents characterized the tactics employed by ICE as 'too forceful.' Both polls surveyed 2,686 U.S. adults. In contrast, a YouGov poll from February 2025, shortly after President Donald Trump assumed office, showed ICE with a net favorability rating of 16 percentage points.
The shooting of Good, along with an incident involving Customs and Border Protection agents in Portland, Oregon, which resulted in injuries to two individuals, has triggered nationwide protests beginning on January 10. Officials from the Department of Homeland Security and the Trump administration have asserted that both shootings were acts of self-defense. However, video analysis conducted by the New York Times suggests that Good's vehicle was turning away from the officer at the time of the shooting. Geoffrey Alpert, a criminology professor at the University of South Carolina, emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, noting that the video appears to contradict the administration's account of the event, indicating that Good was attempting to escape.
Local authorities in Minnesota and Oregon have called for state investigations into both incidents. These shootings represent the latest actions taken by federal agents under the Trump administration's assertive approach to immigration enforcement, which has often been met with public scrutiny. The administration's policies have included the deployment of heavily armed federal agents to various cities to enforce immigration laws, a strategy that has raised concerns regarding the implications for community safety and civil rights.
