Housing Market Pressures Linked to Immigration and Construction Shortfalls
Nov, 14 2025
According to the Congressional Budget Office, the U.S. experienced one of the largest immigration surges in its history during the Biden administration, with an average of 2.4 million immigrants entering the country annually from 2021 to 2024. Goldman Sachs reported that around 60% of these immigrants entered the U.S. illegally. Vance criticized the Biden administration's management of the housing market, noting that new home prices reportedly doubled during Biden's tenure, while increases under the Trump administration were much lower, at only 1% to 2%.
Vance suggested that Republican-led states have been more effective in managing housing demands compared to Democrat-led states, attributing this to regulatory challenges faced by builders in states like California. He also proposed that advancements in construction technology, such as robotics, could improve efficiency without displacing workers, potentially leading to higher wages and increased housing availability.
However, many experts contend that immigration is not a primary driver of the housing crisis. They point to low housing supply and the lingering effects of the Great Recession as more significant factors. Some warn that mass deportations could worsen housing shortages, as undocumented immigrants constitute a substantial portion of the construction workforce.
Vance's comments come amid ongoing economic challenges, including inflation and low rates of first-time homebuyers, which he attributes to the Biden administration's policies. He argued that the economic policies of the Trump administration, including tax cuts and tariffs, would eventually yield positive results. Despite these claims, data indicates that average prices have risen since Trump took office, and foreclosure actions have increased significantly in recent months.
As Congress reconvenes, there is renewed pressure to release information regarding the late Jeffrey Epstein and his connections to Trump, with bipartisan efforts underway to compel the government to disclose remaining Epstein files. Vance praised Trump's political acumen, asserting that he possesses exceptional skills in managing multiple challenges simultaneously.
